PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Free. Fun. For Every Student. 

The Beyond the Bell City Wide Sports Program provides free, organized sports and active play to LAUSD elementary and middle school students enrolled in Beyond the Bell Expanded Learning Programs - right at their own school.

No fees - just safe, exciting, and inclusive sports for all.

PROGRAM LEAD

Rafael Acosta serves as they City-Wide Sports Regional Director with LAUSD's Beyond the Bell Branch, where he oversees youth sports and expanded learning programs serving more than 10,000 students annually across 600+ school sites. Since 2013, he has led teams of supervisors and staff in designing citywide sports leagues, cultivating cross-sector partnerships, and securing and managing grants to expand equitable access to high-quality programming. A proud product of LAUSD, youth sports coach, and youth development professional, Rafael is passionate about mentorship and community impact and is dedicated to helping young people thrive on and off the field.

  • The Beyond the Bell City Wide Comprehensive Sports Program supports Pillar 2 by providing students with daily opportunities for active, engaging, and inclusive play right at their school site. Through safe, structured sports and games led by trained coaches, students develop healthy habits, build teamwork skills, and experience the joy of movement. Seasonal league play allows them to proudly represent their school in regional competitions with neighboring schools - all at no cost to families - ensuring every child can participate, regardless of financial or transportation barriers.
