LA84 Foundation Partnership

LA 84 FoundationThe mission of the LA84 Foundation is to serve youth through sport and to increase knowledge of sport and its impact on people's lives.

The Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD) Beyond the Bell Branch (BTB) and the LA84 Foundation are partners in a very successful after school sports program for middle school students. For the last five years, BTB has had the distinct honor of being the LA84 Foundation’s largest grant receipt, receiving over $500,000 per year to support sports programming at all LAUSD middle schools.

The LA84 Foundation was established in 1983 to manage Southern California’s share of the surplus from the highly successful 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Foundation received $93 million at its inception and, since then, has invested $207 million in sports programs serving more than three million youths in Southern California’s eight counties.

The LA84 Foundation grant to BTB provides much-needed services to middle schools. With this additional grant, LAUSD officials are able to hire part-time, after-school coaches at all LAUSD middle schools. These coaches organize and supervise after school sports leagues and activities from school dismissal until 6 p.m.

Due to this important and successful collaboration, more than 18,000 middle school students have participated in after school flag football, basketball, softball, and soccer leagues each year for the last two years!
