Overview

The Beyond the Bell Sports Program offers organized youth sports and playground activities free of charge to any LAUSD elementary and middle school student enrolled in a Beyond the Bell Expanded Learning Program. Our program aims to eliminate barriers to youth sports participation, such as cost and transportation, while creating a welcoming environment for students to grow and thrive through sports and play.  Throughout the school year, elementary and middle school students can access a variety of physical activities, playground games, and organized sports during after-school hours at their school sites.

Our elementary sports program provides daily opportunities for safe, fun, and meaningful play under the guidance and supervision of trained Beyond the Bell coaches. The program focuses on organized playground games and activities that promote physical health, fun, and teamwork. Elementary students can also choose to participate in seasonal team sports, such as kickball, flag football, futsal, and basketball. These seasons typically last 6-8 weeks and culminate in opportunities for regional and district-wide interscholastic competition held on Saturdays at various LAUSD schools.

Since 2008, the Beyond the Bell’s Middle School Sports Program has offered year-round opportunities for students to engage in organized and structured sports activities. These include recreational playground games, health and fitness stations, sport-specific skill development sessions, and after-school intramural leagues. The program also allows all LAUSD Middle School Expanded Learning Programs to field teams for free Weekend Interscholastic Sports Leagues in flag football, futsal, volleyball, and basketball. Select schools offer supplemental sports, such as slow pitch softball, golf, and soccer during the spring semester.

To continuously improve the quality of the sports program, Beyond the Bell provides seasonal professional development opportunities for coaching staff. These include technical skill-based clinics for each core sport season, bi-annual art of coaching workshops, sideline coaching certification courses, and other sports-based youth development training experiences.

Beyond the Bell’s sports program has grown substantially since its inception and will continue to offer free, high-quality, and fun organized youth sports at every elementary and middle school.
